Frequently Asked Questions About oPass Accounts

Is there an Android version of the app?

No. Because of the way the app uses the iPhone's security features, an Android version that provides similar security is not possible.

Can I backup my passwords and account information?

Yes. You can backup your passwords and account information using the standard backup solutions provided by Apple. Apple has gone to great lengths to provide secure backups for its customers. You can use your computer or iCloud to backup your iPhone.

As with many iPhone applications, to transfer passwords to a new phone you need to take extra steps:

  • If you use your computer to backup your iPhone, you must select the option to encrypt the backup when you make a backup.
  • If you use iCloud to backup your iPhone, you must enable iCloud Keychain on your phone. Also, you must enable "Allow iCloud Keychain" in the app's settings.

For information about backing up your iPhone, see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977.

Are my passwords protected in backups?

Yes. oPass uses a security feature of the iPhone called the "keychain" to protect your passwords in backups.

The protection provided to your passwords in backups depends on the backup method you use:

Backup methodPasswords protected byPasswords restored to a new phone?
Unencrypted to your computerYour iPhone's UID (device unique identifier)No
Encrypted to your computerYour iPhone's backup passwordYes
iCloud without iCloud KeychainYour iPhone's UID (device unique identifier)No
iCloud with iCloud KeychainYour iCloud Security CodeYes

Other account information - usernames, categories, web site addresses, notes, documents, etc., will transfer to a new phone regardless of the backup method used.

For maximum protection, your iPhone backup password or iCloud Security Code should be a long, random sequence of characters - at least 32 characters in length and consisting of a combination of uppercase, lowercase, and numeric characters. You rarely need to use your iPhone backup password or iCloud Security Code, so having a long backup password/code should not be inconvenient. You can also use a long phrase which only you know and no one can guess.

What should I do to protect my passwords and account information?

Phone Settings

  • Set a passcode for your phone (using the iPhone's Settings app). This is necessary to make the security features used by the app work on your iPhone.
  • Lock your phone when you are not using it. You can do this by pressing the phone's "Wake/Sleep" button.
  • Set the phone to Autolock (Settings > General).
  • Keep your iPhone updated to the most current version of iOS.

oPass Settings

  • Enable App Lock. This protects your passwords and account information if you let a friend use your phone (for example, while driving).
  • Lock the app after using the app (it will lock automatically after 5 minutes in the background).

Password Selection

Using good passwords is critical for protecting the accounts you care most about (these could be financial accounts, social media accounts, etc). oPass makes it easy to use good passwords. You can use the password generator in oPass to create strong passwords.

  • Use a different password for each account - do not use the same password for more than one account.
  • Use random passwords (random means there is no pattern).
  • Use passwords at least 12 characters in length.
  • Use passwords with characters from at least 3 character classes (uppercase, lowercase, numbers).

Where are my passwords stored?

Your passwords and account information are stored on your iPhone, and only on your iPhone. They are never stored on a web site or in anyone's cloud. The app never sends your passwords anywhere - not to iCloud, a web site, or any other computer.

What happens if I lose my iPhone?

If your iPhone is lost or stolen, your passwords and account information are protected by your iPhone passcode and the iPhone's built-in security, which is designed by Apple to make it impossible for anyone - including criminals and government agencies - to access your data.

To keep a copy of your information, make regular backups of your iPhone; your account information and documents are saved and restored with those backups. Be sure to use a backup method that will restore your passwords too (see the question above Can I backup my passwords and account information?)

Does oPass Accounts collect any of my data?

No. The app does not scan your phone and it does not collect any data from your phone. There is no registration, so you never provide an email address or any information about yourself. The app displays no ads and collects no information for advertising. The app's creator has no information about who has downloaded or is using the app.

Does oPass Accounts sync between my devices?

By design for security, the app keeps everything on a single iPhone and makes no network connections. It does not sync across copies of the app on other devices.

Can I store documents like photos and PDFs with my accounts?

Yes. You can attach screenshots, photos, and PDFs to any account. You can import documents from other apps or capture them with the camera, and you can export or print them from the app. Documents are copied into the app's local storage and receive the same high level of iPhone security protection as the rest of your account information, and they are included in backups.

What iPhone and iOS version do I need?

oPass Accounts is designed specifically for iPhone and requires iOS 16.6 or later.

How much does oPass Accounts cost?

The app is free for up to 20 accounts. After that, there is a one-time charge of $3.99 for a permanent upgrade to unlimited accounts. There are no other charges, and no subscription fees.
